Product Background:

The Commercial Market Outlook is a mobile application released to app stores on a yearly cadence to coincide with industry tradeshows. It displays public forecast numbers for air travel needs over the next 20 years.

My Role:

Lead Designer

Problem exploration:

This year, the business wanted to execute a design refresh to bring it to visual parity with other marketing collateral released concurrently with industry tradeshows. The app has had little change visually from year to year and the business wanted it looking refreshed.

Approach:

The colors were off-brand and needed corrected. That was the first identified problem. However, through a product evaluation, I also discovered there were visual inconsistencies throughout the app that resulted in a disjointed and incongruent user experience. Ultimately, the application was not to the level of fit and finish that the business desired and in some situations created frustration for users. There were other changes required of the business because of on-going regional instability because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

I was given the updated color palette and that was the first thing to be addressed. Although I had the colors, I did not have any usage guidelines, so I was able to use the color palette in a way I felt best for the mobile screen space.

I documented the other inconsistencies and interaction problems and shared my findings with my business partner. As we went through each item, I communicated why these were problems and together we prioritized what to put into development first.

The app was released to the stores and was ready for use at the airshow.

It’s here if you want to see it!

Reflection:

I loved contributing to this product. Mobile design has some different constraints than enterprise software. I got to work with a branding agency who supplied the color palette, but for next year I would like to be able to contribute to the color palette. We ran into some accessibility problems because of contrast ratios. But ultimately, this was a great example of using my design and aesthetic sense to drive the design and improve the experience.
